I am about half way through my busy summer FULL of all kinds of art shows; and even though I have the best intentions to update my blog often, during the summer those intentions just slip through the cracks!... Some people claim that I like to torture myself by doing on average one art festival per week, but I disagree. The art festivals allow me to travel, I have a great time meeting new people, and as long as I stick close to the cool Lake Michigan, it is only a pleasure to work outside and chat with people about my art. As long as the weather cooperates, of course!!! ... And I am (almost) used to waking up at 5 AM on most Saturdays.
Here is a small pictorial summary from my recent travels. Kurt and I did the Saugatuck / South Haven 4th of July art shows weekend again, which is always fun. Here is the lighthouse of Holland, Michigan, where we stayed the first night, nicknamed Big Red. I took the photo while I was waiting patiently for the sun to set as we were getting ready to watch the Holland fireworks on the night before 4th.
Here is the line at the ice cream shop from the same night. Who is crazy enough to wait in line THAT long for a couple of scoops of ice cream?! We are! I had a craving for the German Chocolate Cake flavor, dammit! In the end, the ice cream was good... but I've had better!
Later, we spent a couple of nights inland, in a cabin amongst the farmlands and blueberries of Michigan. There, I discovered that people really like to decorate their houses and front yards with big wooden cutouts of figures...like this. Sadly, I am afraid that I just can't compete with this art:
And lastly, here is a beautiful sunset over Lake Michigan as seen from Saint Joseph, MI (another great town that I will return to!). Wow! Being on the other side of the "pond" don't get sunsets over the lake in Chicago, so this view had me totally spoiled! By the way, locals here claim that they can see Chicago on the horizon from St. Joseph...and on clear nights, they can even make out Navy Pier. Not sure if I believe that - so will have to test the theory by watching many St. Joseph sunsets in the future!
Coming up this weekend - Midsummer Art Festival in Sheboygan, WI. Sheboygan is the capital of bratwurst! Also, new work inspired by my recent travels will be posted soon.
